Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Salford City

The last Salford City Orange home kit

Good – home shirt 2013/14
I’m giving this shirt the ‘Good’ rating merely from a traditional point of view. This shirt was the last orange home shirt that Salford City have worn to date and was the colour of the home shirt for most of their history.
Salford had 18 different variations of an orange shirt going back to 1963 before the ‘Class of ’92’ consortium came along to buy the club.
Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville came in and invested a large sum of money into the club. They also insisted on changing the clubs colours to red and white, just like the shirts they wore throughout their Manchester United careers.

Bad – home shirt 2014/15
It should therefore be the case that Salford’s first red and white shirt should be rated in the ‘Bad’ category. It’s horrible to see that a club changes colours just for their owners, just like Cardiff City and Forest Green Rovers have in recent years.

Ugly – home shirt – 2019/20
This season is Salford City’s first in the Football League and they are playing in a horrible shirt!
Just like many other clubs in this series, they are wearing a terrible shirt in an historic season. I’ve now decided that I will write up a Top 10 Worst Shirts article at the end of this series!
