Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.14

Vincent Kompany. Man mountain. Leader. Tough tackler. Own goal genius!
This week’s ‘Greatest Own Goal’ comes from the former Belgian defender and Anderlecht incumbent from his eleven year spell at Manchester City.

The own goal came in a six-goal thriller at Craven Cottage on 21st December 2013 and provided Fulham with an equaliser to make the score 2-2.
Sadly for the home side, City went on to win the game 4-2 but Kompany’s own goal gave them all something to cheer and have a good laugh at!

The City captain had scored down at the same end in the first half to double the visitor’s lead in the 43rd minute. Sadly this goal wasn’t the one that was remembered from this league game and won’t be appearing on any blog articles like this any time soon!

Fulham’s attack began with Scott Parker sliding a through ball to Sascha Riether who was running on the overlap on the right wing.
The German right back looked up and slid a low cross presumably for John Arne Riise at the far post. The ball was never going to reach the Norwegian and Kompany calmly jogged in to intercept the ball at the edge of the six yard box. What happened next was a calamity!

Kompany sliced the ball hard with his left foot just after it bounced off a divot. The ball skewed up in the air, over his goalkeeper Joe Hart and clipped the inside of the far post and in to the back of the net. To make the goal all the more comical, Kompany’s team mate Jesus Navas had followed the flight of the ball and tried an extravagant karate kick to clear the danger, but crashing into the far post and ended up in a heap in the back of the net!

Manchester City ended up winning the game 4-2 and the win took them up to second in the table. They would eventually go on and win the league, pipping Liverpool to the title by two points.
