Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.13

Poor Frank Sinclair! He had a torrid time with own goals when he played for Leicester City, scoring three own goals in his six years in his time Filbert Street.
Sinclair put through his own net in the first two weekends of the 1999/00 season. The first came at Highbury against Arsenal and the second at Filbert Street the following Saturday against Chelsea.

The third of his howlers came on 2nd March 2002 in an away match in the league against Middlebrough. With less than two minutes on the clock, Sinclair got his name on the scoresheet. Sadly for him, it was for the wrong team.

The best thing about this own goal is that the cameraman didn’t manage to catch it on video. Even the camera behind the goal took a bit of a jolt to keep up with the ball as Sinclair was never expected to hammer the ball back to his team mate Ian Walker in the Leicester goal!

Leicester’s Stan Collymore had possession of the ball wide on the right and just inside the Middlesbrough half. He was shoved off the ball by Robbie Mustoe and a free kick was awarded.

The ball was played between a few Leicester players along the halfway line before reaching Sinclair who was a full 40 yards from goal. With no Middlesbrough player within ten yards of him, the centre back booted the ball back towards goalkeeper Ian Walker who was stood at the edge of his penalty area.

Sadly for Sinclair, Walker wasn’t expecting the backpass to be hit with such force and despite making a desperate lunge for the ball, was unable to prevent the ball from rolling past him into the empty net.

It’s sad to think that Frank Sinclair spent six years at Leicester City, making 194 appearances for the club and is still only remembered for those three own goals!
