A blog about all things football

On This Day – 7th September

Football – 4/9/1977 England training – Before England vs. Switzerland (07/09/1977) The six Liverpool players picked for the England international against Switzerland at Wembley. Left to right: Ian Callaghan, Terry McDermott, Ray Clemence, Phil Neal, Ray Kennedy and Emlyn Hughes.

Ron Greenwood took charge of his first match as England manager on this day back in 1977. Switzerland were the opponents at Wembley on that early September evening and the majority of the 42,000 inside Wembley were left disappointed by a goalless draw.

England’s starting line-up raised more than a few eyebrows as it included no fewer than six Liverpool players! Kevin Keegan was also named in the team, but had left Anfield at the end of the previous campaign.
The six Liverpool players that started the match were: Ray Clemence, Phil Neal Emlyn Hughes, Ian Callaghan, Ray Kennedy and Terry McDermott.

Trevor Cherry, Dave Watson, Mick Channon, Trevor Francis and the aforementioned Kevin Keegan made up the remaining players in the England side. Gordon Hill (one of this blog’s patrons) replaced Mick Channon at half time and Ray Wilkins came on in the 81st minute for Ian Callaghan.

Ron Greenwood stayed on as England manager until 1982 and was replaced by Bobby Robson, who left Ipswich Town to take the biggest job in English football.
