On This Day – 30th March

Arsenal and Manchester United had a great rivalry in the 1990’s and first half of this decade. The first match between the two clubs was played on this day back in 1895.

Both clubs were known by different names, Arsenal were known as Woolwich Arsenal and United were Newton Heath.
Woolwich Arsenal won the game 3-2 with goals from Peter Mortimer, Gavin Crawford and Robert John Buchanan. Newton Heath scored through John Clarkin and Robert Donaldson.

The match was played in front of 6,000 fans at Woolwich Arsenal’s Manor Ground in Plumstead. A photo of the old ground is at the top of the article.
