Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Sunderland

Good – home shirt 1973/74
This was the first shirt that Sunderland wore after their huge FA Cup win in 1973. It has to be their best shirt as it has ‘FA Cup Winners 1973’ embroidered on it!

Peter Reid consoles Michael Gray after the Play Off Final defeat in 1998

Bad – away shirt 1997 – 99
This shirt holds bad memories for Sunderland fans as it was worn in the 1998 Play Off Final to Charlton Athletic.
Asics designed and manufactured the shirt and Lambton’s Beer was the sponsor.

Ugly – away shirt 1995 – 97
This shirt is an awful design. It is made up of a bottle green and yellow with a collar that looks way too big and fading bottle green stripes on the shoulders.
Sunderland wore this in the season that they were promoted from the First Division…and the following season when they went straight back down again.
