Good, Bad and ugly kits from the past – Southampton

Good – home shirt 2010/11
This shirt was brought out to commemorate Southampton’s 125th anniversary. It is a replica of the shirt that they wore for their first four years from 1885 to 1889.
Many commemorative shirts are nice and this along with the Arsenal redcurrant shirt from 2005/06 are my favourites. I rated this as good on the Arsenal page of this series here.

Bad – home shirt 1987 – 89
Danish sports brand Hummel designed and manufactured this shirt. The Danish national team wore a version of this shirt but it really isn’t a nice design.
The body of the shirt was split into two parts, a plain red half and plain white. The red half had narrow white pinstripes and the white had yes, you guessed it, red pinstripes.
The sleeves had red and white arrows running down it and with all of these different patterns, the shirt really looks a mess. If Hummel went for just one pattern then they could have looked a lot better.
Aston Villa also had the same design at the time and that wasn’t a great look either!

Ugly – away shirt 1995 – 97
I saw Southampton wear this shirt at Highbury in September and my hero Dennis Bergkanp netted his first two goals for Arsenal that day.
The shirt looked ugly then and a quarter of a century later, it still is!
