Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Port Vale

Good – home shirt 1987/88
Not a particularly great shirt but Vale wore it when they beat Tottenhm in the FA Cup so that’s a winner in my eyes!
I couldn’t find a real stand-out winner for the ‘Good’ category as Vale have consistently worn good shirts. with the exception of the one below in the ‘Bad’ section. That shirt isn’t particularly bad either.
The 1987/88 shirt was only around for one season. Designed and manufactured by a brand that I’d never heard of before called New Olympic, it was sponsored by ABC Minolta Copiers. Very 1980’s!

Vale’s player’s barnet or shirt, what’s worse?!

Bad – home shirt 1991/92
Worn in both home and away legs against Liverpool in the League Cup in 1991/92, this shirt’s design looks like acid-washed jeans (I had to look that up!) which were fashionable at the time.
The club kept the same design for the following season when they changed sponsors from Kalamazoo to Tunstall Insurance. The Kalamazoo logo on the front of the shirt was done in funky lettering. The letters floated upwards and looked like the words like ‘POW!’ and ‘SMASH!’ that splash across the screen when a character gets punched in a cartoon!

Bad – away shirt 1996/97
Port Vale have the honour of being the hardest team for me to find shirts for this article! The home shirts are all equally good, few of them are bad and even fewer are ugly!
The only reason that I have chosen this particular shirt as ugly is quite a petty reason. I don’t like the fact that I can’t read the white writing on the yellow and black shirt. That’s the only fault that I could find with it!
