Good, Bad and Ugly kits from the past – Oldham Athletic

Ian Marshall in the 1990 FA Cup Semi Final against Manchester United

Good – home shirt 1989 – 91
I could think of no better reason to include this shirt in the ‘Good’ section other than it was worn during Oldham’s most successful season.
In the 1989/90 season, Oldham reached the League Cup Final and FA Cup Semi Final.
The home shirt was manufactured by Umbro and there were watermarks of the Umbro diamond logo in the background of the shirt which was plain blue with red and white collar and cuffs.

Oldham’s lime green away shirt from 1991/92

Bad – away shirt 1991/92 and third shirt 1992/93
This wild design was used as Oldham’s away shirt in the 1991/92 season with sponsors’ Bovis name across the front.
When JD Sports took over in 1992/93, their name was put across the shirt and it was used as the third shirt.
Celtic had the same shirt at the same period, designed and manufactured by Umbro.

Ugly – home shirt 1996 – 98
Quite why shirt manufacturers Pony decided to go with red and blue horizontal stripes as the design for Oldham’s home shirt is unknown.
The club had never worn red and blue before or since. It didn’t bring much luck either as they were relegated to the Second Division in the first season it was worn!
