On This Day – 21st January

Les Ferdinand joined West Ham United on this day back in 2003 as Hammers boss Glenn Roeder was out to try and find goals – and quick!

When experienced striker Ferdinand joined from London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on 21st January 2003, The Hammers were rooted to the bottom of the Premiership league table. They were finding goals hard to come by, having scored 24 in 23 games, and so Roeder went in for Ferdinand.

‘Sir Les’ had limited playing opportunities at Spurs with Teddy Sheringham, Sergei Rebrov and Steffen Iversen also competing for a starting role as a striker at White Hart Lane.

Ferdinand struggled in West Ham colours and would only find the back of the net twice in 14 games. Incidentally, his first goal came against Tottenham, the very club who sold him to West Ham in the first place!
