On This Day- 16th January

Today is Bobby Zamora’s birthday!
The striker who appeared for seven clubs over course of his career, also made two appearances for the England national team, playing against Hungary and Sweden.

Zamora started his career at Bristol Rovers before going on loan to Bath City and then Brighton and Hove Albion.
He was very prolific at Brighton, bagging 83 goals in 136 games, helping to secure back-to-back promotions. Tottenham then spent £1.5 million to move him to White Hart Lane and the glamour of the Premier League.

Sadly, Bobby couldn’t replicate his goalscoring prowess shown at Brighton and only mustered a single goal in 18 appearances at Spurs. He moved to West Ham United and did better there, scoring 40 goals in 152 games.

Fulham was the next stop and Zamora played and scored in Fulham’s famous Europa League run that saw them reach the Final. He scored the first of Fulham’s four goals against Juventus and gave Juve’s world-class defender Fabio Cannavaro the run-around in the game. It was in his time at Craven Cottage that he won his two England caps.

After Fulham, Zamora joined the fourth London club of his career, Queens Park Rangers. The most notable goal that he scored was a 90th minute winner over Derby County at Wembley to gain promotion to the Premiership.

Zamora was released by Rangers in the summer of 2015 and he re-joined Brighton, back where he made a name for himself.
Brighton had moved on leaps and bounds since he was last seen in their blue and white kit and now had their own stadium. Zamora was more used to playing in front of crowds of 7,000 for Albion home games at the Withdean Stadium!

After scoring seven goals in 26 games for Brighton, Zamora left the club at the end of the season and retired from the game at Christmas 2016.

Happy Birthday Bobby!
