On This Day – 20th March

David Corbett and Pickles collect their reward

It was on this day back in 1966 the Jules Rimet trophy was stolen from a public exhibition at Westminster Central Hall in London.
A replica was hastily made so something could be presented at the tournament three months later.

The Football Association’s blushes were saved as a dog named Pickles found the trophy seven days later, wrapped in newspaper at the bottom of a garden!
Pickles’ owner David Corbett received a reward of nearly £5,000 for the discovery of the trophy. That works out at about £79,300 in today’s money.

Pickles and Corbett were invited to the World Cup celebration banquet after England won the tournament as an extra thank-you.
The replica is now in the National Football Museum.
