On This Day – 9th May

Chelsea secured the Premier League title on this day back in 2010 with an incredible 8-0 win over Wigan Athletic at Stamford Bridge.

Carlo Ancellotti’s men were only 2-0 up at half time but turned on the style in the second half to record their highest Premier League win. Didier Drogba hit a hat-trick in the second half and Nicolas Anelka grabbed a brace. Frank Lampard, Salomon Kalou and Ashley Cole also scored to complete the rout.

Chelsea ended the campaign with an impressive 103 goals to their name, becoming the first team to score over 100 goals in a Premier League season. They would go on and complete a league and cup double sid days later with a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth in the FA Cup Final at Wembley.

Wigan finished the season in 16th place, only six points clear of the relegation spots.
