It was on this day in 1966 that 16-year-old Peter Shilton made his debut in goal for Leicester City. He kept a clean sheet against Everton and Leicester went on to win the game 3-0.
Peter Shilton would play 1,390 competitive matches over the course of a playing career that would last 31 years. This astonishing number of appearances included 125 caps for England, a record that stands to this day.
Over the course of Shilton’s career, he won eight major honours. He lifted the Second Division championship in 1970/71 with Leicester City and First Division with Nottingham Forest in 1977/78. He was a crucial part of the Nottingham Forest side that won two consecutive European Cups with Forest in 1979 and 1980.
On 1997, Shilton made his final career appearance for Leyton Orient against Wigan Athletic at the age of 47! It was his 1,005th Football League match, a record that is unlikely to ever be broken.
