On This Day – 30th May

Nottingham Forest won the first of two consecutive European Cups on this day in 1979, beating Swedish side Malmo 1-0.
The only goal of the game was scored by Trevor Francis, who had only joined Forest just a few months earlier from Birmingham City. He cost £1 million and became the first British player to fetch a seven-figure sum.

The game was played in Munich at the Olympia Stadion, the host venue of the 1972 Olympics and 1974 World Cup Final. Forest had beaten the holders Liverpool, AEK Athens, Grasshoppers Zurich and FC Cologne on their way to the Final.

A year later, Nottingham Forest retained the trophy, beating Hamburg 1-0 at the Bernabeu in Madrid, Spain.
