On This Day – 1st May

Sir Alf Ramsey was sacked by the Football Association on this day in 1974 after eleven years in charge of the England national team.

Ramsey will forever be known as the man who guided England to World Cup glory, but after failing to qualify for the 1974 World Cup in West Germany, the FA decided that they needed to bring in someone new. They plumped for Leeds United manager Don Revie, despite many calls for Brian Clough to take over from Ramsey.

Ramsey had a relatively good record in his time with England, winning 69 of the 113 matches that he presided over. Unfortunately, the failure to qualify for the World Cup would cost him his job.
