On This Day – 19th April

Sunderland came to Stamford Bridge on this day in 2014 with the odds firmly stacked against them. No one expected them to beat Chelsea given that they hadn’t won in ten games. The hosts were two points off top spot in the league and had qualified for the semi finals of the Champions League.

Another daunting record would have persuaded even the most optimistic of Sunderland fan. Chelsea were unbeaten in 77 Premier League matches at Stamford Bridge under Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese had returned to the club after spells at Inter Milan and Real Madrid and his proud home record was intimidating, with 61 wins and 16 draws.

Despite all of this, Sunderland came away with a 2-1 win. They had to do it the hard way, falling behind after 12 minutes after Samuel Eto’o forced home a corner from close range.

Six minutes later, Sunderland were level. Connor Wickham chased in to fire past Mark Schwarzer after the Australian goalkeeper had saved well from Marcos Alonso.
Italian striker Fabio Borini secured a famous win with only eight minutes remaining after converting a penalty.

Chelsea went on to finish third, four points away from eventual champions Manchester City. The Sunderland defeat played a huge part in The Blues not going on to win the title.
