Iconic Moments in Football No.82

This week’s ‘Iconic Moment’ got the nation whipped up into a World Cup frenzy ahead of the 1990 tournament in Italy.

The music band New Order were rewarded with the honour of producing England’s 1990 World Cup song. It would become something of a cult classic and many of the fans who remember the tournament 31 years ago still hold the song close to their hearts.

The first England World Cup song came twenty years earlier as the entire squad got together to sing ‘Back Home’. 1990’s anthem wasn’t as popular with the squad, with only six players turning up to film the official video and for the actual recording of the song. They were joined by comedian Keith Allen and recorded the video which in itself is as memorable as the song itself.

The players involved in the song were John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Paul Gascoigne, Steve McMahon, Chris Waddle and Des Walker.

John Barnes memorably added a rap verse in the song, something that he has taken a lot of stick for over the years. It added a different dynamic to the song and showed a different side to the Liverpool winger.

World In Motion reached top spot in the UK Singles Chart on 9th June 1990, where it stayed for two weeks. Elton John’s ‘Sacrifice’ took its place at Number one. It remains a cult classic, something that I’m sure the band would have preferred than an extra few weeks at the top of the charts!
