The Ibrox Stadium Disaster – In Memorium

Fifty years ago today, 66 Rangers fans went to watch their heroes play against Old Firm rivals Celtic and never came home. The disaster was one of the worst in British sporting history and remains fresh in the mind of those unfortunate enough to be there or be involved in it.

A crush on one of the exit stairways turned into a disaster as 66 fans passed away and more than 200 fans were injured.
As a result of the disaster, Ibrox Stadium underwent a huge rebuilding over the following years and became all-seater ten years later. At the time, nearly every ground across the world was predominantly terracing with a small percentage of the capacity being made up of seating. The board of directors at Rangers did not want a repeat of the disaster in 1971.

May the 66 Glasgow Rangers fans who passed away on that fateful night rest in peace. My thoughts are also with those who lost loved ones on that night.
