On This Day – 2nd January

The Rangers 1938/39 team

A record attendance for a league match in Britain clicked through the turnstiles at Ibrox on this day in 1939.
An incredible 118,567 watched the Old Firm Derby between Rangers and Celtic in the 1938/39 season. The hosts won 2-1 but Celtic managed to hit the woodwork three times.

There were over 30,000 fans locked out and many of the 120,000 crowd weren’t able to even get onto the tightly packed terracing. They had to wait in the concourse area between the turnstiles and terracing, unable to get a view of the match!

Rangers went on to win the league title, finishing eleven points clear of Celtic who finished the season as runners up.
