On This Day – 28th January

Berwick’s Gordon Haig is carried off after their famous 1-0 win

Berwick Rangers became a household name on this day in 1967 after defeating Glasgow Rangers 1-0 in the First Round of the Scottish FA Cup. The town of Berwick is actually just south of the border in England and have been playing in the Scottish leagues since 1905, 24 years after they were founded.

13,365 crammed into Shielfield Park (a record that stands to this day) to see the 19-time winners of the Scottish Cup humbled by the Second Division side.

Rangers were widely expected to win the match and had won five of the last seven FA Cups. They started very strongly, forcing ten corners in the first 30 minutes. Then in the 32nd minute of the match, Sammy Reid scored against the run of play to give Berwick an unexpected lead. The home side gave a good account for themselves and continued to give their opponents a tough time.

Rangers tried in vain to avoid embarrassment but couldn’t find the all-important equaliser. After the match, Rangers’ captain John Greig described the defeat as “probably the worst result in the history of our club”.

Berwick went out in the next round, losing 1-0 away to Hibernian.
