A blog about all things football

On This Day – 15th January

Worcester City 2 Liverpool 1. A scoreline that is unthinkable now, but it actually happened on this day in 1959.
Liverpool were a Second Division side at the time and Worcester City played in the Southern League. The result was a shock, but one that is often overlooked after more recent giantkillings are referenced in the press. Time has been good for Liverpool!

The Liverpool team defeated in 1959 had a certain Ronnie Moran playing in their defence that afternoon. Moran would spend sixteen years at the club as a player before joining the coaching staff straight after retiring as a player. He was part of the famous ‘Anfield Bootroom’ and took over as the caretaker manager on two occasions. Moran stayed at the club until 1998, when he retired after spending 46 years at the club.

A record 15,111 fans crammed into the stands at St George’s Lane. After ten minutes they were celebrating as Worcester City took the lead thanks to a goal from Tommy Skuse. City doubled their lead after 81 minutes, thanksto an own goal from Liverpool defender Dick White.
Geoff Twentyman scored from the penalty spot for the visitors but Worcester held on for a famous victory.

Worcester City finished fifth in the Southern League North West Division. They applied for election to the Football League at the end of the season, but fell well short of the required votes to gain a place in the professional leagues.
