On This Day – 10th December

It was on this day in 2000 that Tottenham defender Ledley King scored what was then the quickest goal in Premier League history.
King’s goal was scored after 9.82 seconds in an away game at Bradford City that ended in a 3-3 draw. He was playing in a more advanced role in midfield, a position he played in before he moved back to central defence.

King hammered home the opener after gaining possession about 40 yards from goal. He took the ball forward ten yards before smashing the ball low into the far corner of the net.

Jamie Lawrence levelled the scores eight minutes later before Sol Campbell gave Spurs the lead after 21 minutes.
After 54 minutes, Chris Armstrong added a third for the visitors before Bradford made a comeback. First, Dean Windass scored with a little over 20 minutes to go before Italian Benito Carbone scored an equaliser in the 89th minute.

King’s record stood for 19 years before Shane Long scored for Southampton at Watford on 23rd April 2019.

Ledley King’s career was significantly blighted by injury. If he had slightly better luck and was able to stay away from the treatment table, he would definitely have become one of the greatest English defenders.
