Greatest Own Goals of All-Time No.23

Some players tend to have more bad luck than others with own goals. As a fan, you always remember the hapless defender who was the unlucky man in the wrong place at the wrong time. He always managed to divert the ball past your team’s goalkeeper more than any other player.
As an Arsenal fan, it was always Lee Dixon. In fact, it was he who was to feature in the first part of this series with a peach of an own goal against Coventry City. (You can read that article by clicking here).

Manchester United’s Phil Jones has an uncanny knack of putting through his own net and this hasn’t gone unnoticed on social media. There are also several videos online of his biggest errors on YouTube.
One of those clangers came in a Champions League tie, away to Valencia. The centre half scored a quite superb own goal in the opening minutes of the second half to give the Spanish team a 2-0 lead.

Valencia’s Carlos Soler played quite a soft through ball for striker Michy Batshuayi to chase. United goalkeeper Sergio Romero came racing out of his goal to narrow the angle, and before Batshuayi could even get a touch on the ball, Jones dived in to slide the ball past his own goalkeeper!

Marcus Rashford got a goal back for United with three minutes to go but it wasn’t enough as they lost the match 2-1.
