On This Day – 23rd September

Arsenal beat Sheffield United 3-0 on this day back in 2006 to record their first league win at their new Emirates Stadium home. The match as also Neil Warnock’s 1000th match of his managerial career.

Arsenal’s three goals coming in a fifteen minute spell in the second half. William Gallas opened the scoring after 65 minutes with his first Arsenal goal before United defender Phil Jagielka put through his own net to double Arsenal’s lead four minutes later. Thierry Henry then sealed the victory in the 80th minute to give Arsenal all three points.

Some boffin then made the discovery of a little bit of a strange stat. In what surely must have been a first in the Premier League (no I’m not going to check and confirm!), all three of the goalscorers shared the same birthday!
William Gallas and Thierry Henry were both born on 17th August 1977 and Phil Jagielka was born five years later on 17th August 1982. It was definitely the sort of statistic that John Motson would love and no doubt it was he who noticed it first!
