A blog about all things football

On This Day – 20th September

Brian Clough passed away on this day back in 2004 at the age of 69. Many people consider him to be one of the greatest managers that the English game has ever had, and I for one agree with them!

Clough was a prolific goalscorer as a player, ending his career early due to a bad knee injury. He still scored an amazing 267 goals in 296 matches for Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

Despite this phenomenal goalscoring, he is better known for his managerial career. He was manager of Hartlepools United, Derby County, Brighton and Hove Albion, Leeds United and finally Nottingham Forest.

Clough won the European Cup twice (in a row!), First Division twice, the Second Divsion once and the League Cup four times. He also won several other minor competitions, so many that I can’t list them in this brief article!

I could write so much more about Brian Clough and will over the coming months but this is just a very brief overview of his time in the game.
