On This Day – 1st June

A year has passed since the tragic passing of Jose Antonio Reyes, the former Arsenal and Spain striker. He was only 35 years old when he died in a car accident on 1st June 2019.

Reyes started his career at Sevilla before Arsene Wenger decided to sign him for Arsenal for just over £10 million.
He joined midway through the Invincibles season, scoring twice against Chelsea to knock them out of the 2004 FA Cup.

Reyes left Arsenal to join Real Madrid on loan in the Summer of 2006. He then joined Athletico Madrid before returning to his first club, Sevilla.
Towards the end of his playing career, Reyes never settled anywhere for very long and played in his native Spain for Espanyol, Cordoba and Extremadura. He even hadf a spell in China, playing for Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard.

He was out driving with his two cousins on 1st June 2019 when he lost control of the car. He passed away alongside one of his cousins, the second in the car survived but suffered from injuries.
