A blog about all things football

On This Day – 18th March

It was on this day back in 1900 that Ajax Amsterdam were formed.
Four men created the club. They were Floris Stempel, Carel Reeser and brothers Han and Johan Dade.

Ajax have won the Dutch national championship more than any other club. They have lifted the title 34 times, ten more times than PSV Einhoven who are next with 24 wins.

Ajax have also won the Dutch Cup 19 times. They have done well in Europe, winning six trophies.
Ajax won three consecutive European Cup Finals from 1971 to 1973. They added at fourth European Cup in 1995.
They won the UEFA Cup in 1992 and the European Cup Winners Cup in 1987. Two European Super Cup wins in 1974 and 1995 were added to their European wins.

Many greats have worn the red and white of Ajax over the years. They have had many homegrown players go through their ranks.
Johan Cruyff, Ruud Krol, Marco Van Basten and the de Boer brothers came through the ranks at Ajax.
In more recent times Dennis Bergkamp, Patrick Kluivert and Clarence Seedorf played for the Dutch giants after learning their trade at the famous Ajax Academy.

Many clubs are referred to as ‘European giants’ and this title definitely sums up Ajax.
