A blog about all things football

On This Day – 24th February

It was on this day back in 1968 when a staggering 134,461 fans clicked through the turnstiles at Hampden Park to watch Scotland and England play out a 1-1 draw.

The crowd that day was a record attendance for a Home International and they were treated to a real battle between the oldest footballing rivals.
England started well and had a few chances to take the lead. The World Champions went ahead on 20 minutes through Martin Peters, scorer of the second goal in the World Cup Final less than two years previously.

Less than a quarter of an hour later, the Scots were level. John Hughes, the Celtic striker was the scorer and the game finished 1-1.
