A blog about all things football

On This Day – 17th February

On this day back in 1940, The Arsenal Stadium Mystery hit the big screens.
The film’s release came five months into the start of the Second World War and was filmed in and around Highbury.

The film was a murder mystery and based around the death of an opposing player who dies on the Highbury pitch during a friendly between Arsenal and a fictitious amateur side call the Trojans.
Parts of the match action used in the film was taken from the last home game of the 1938/39 season against Brentford. It was the last home game before war was declared.

Several Arsenal players had some acting parts in the film and Arsenal manager George Allison had a key part in the film. Having seen the film, it’s he wasn’t actually that bad. It’s a good job he stuck with football management instead of pursuing an acting career!
