A blog about all things football

On This Day – 23rd January

Alex Ferguson opened his chequebook on this day back in 2002, obtaining the services of a certain Diego Forlan from Argentinian club Independiente.

Forlan cost Manchester United £7.5 million and his time at Old Trafford isn’t exactly remembered for him banging in countless goals.
In fact, he had to wait eight months before he found the back of the net – and that was from the penalty spot!

After an unimpressive 10 goals in 63 games, the Uruguayan striker was flogged to Villarreal in Spain at a fraction of his original cost.

One moment that probably isn’t as well known as it really should have been was this miss in front of an open goal against Juventus in a pre-season game in the States. It was quite frankly, embarrassing!

One of my all-time favourite misses!
