Iconic Moments In Football No.2

Eddie Cavanagh invades the pitch, FA Cup Final 1966

Eddie evades the first policeman but a second is hot on his heels…

“There’s some people on the pitch, they think it’s all over…It is now!!”
Kenneth Wolstenholme shouted excitedly in a famous Cup Final at Wembley in 1966.
However, today’s Iconic Moment in Football is from two months prior to the World Cup Final, in the FA Cup Final between Everton and Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday had taken a 2-0 lead but Everton fought back with two goals to level.
Enter our hero of the piece Eddie Cavanagh!  Eddie was an Everton fan who somehow managed to get onto the pitch shortly after Mike Trebilock had scored his second of the game to level the match.
A policeman tried to grab Cavanagh but only managed to pull off the Liverpudlian’s jacket but his merry jaunt across the hallowed turf didn’t last much longer.
A second policeman rugby tackled him from behind and pinned Cavanagh to the ground.  He was dragged off the pitch and out of a gate straight out of the ground.
But somehow he managed to get back into the stadium through another way and got to see Derek Temple’s 74th minute winner!

David Baddiel and Frank Skinner did a tribute to Eddie’s pitch invasion on their
Phoenix From The Flames section of their 90’s football-themed TV show
Fantasy Football League.  I have included a video of it below:
