On This Day – 22nd January

After a 2-1 win at home to Hartlepool United on 4th December 1993, Second Division Blackpool lost seven league games on the trot. To ease the fan’s pain, Blackpool’s board of directors decided to offer free admission for their home game against Swansea City on this day in 1994.

7030 fans clicked through the turnstiles at Bloomfield Road that afternoon, more than double the crowd of their previous game (3374 against Fulham). The larger crowd must have had an impact as The Tangerines drew 1-1 and their run of defeats came to an end.

Another two defeats followed, before Blackpool finally won their first game in three months with a 1-0 win at home over Exeter City on 5th February. Dave Bamber scored the winning goal against The Grecians.

Blackpool finished in 20th place at the end of the season. They narrowly avoided relegation, finishing a point ahead of Fulham who occupied the last relegation place in 21st. Swansea ended the season in 13th place.
